"Best" depends on what you want the footprint to do for you. A trader who reads every bar by hand needs different things from one who wants the same imbalances traded automatically. This guide gives you the criteria that matter in NinjaTrader 8, then explains honestly where Vantedge Footprint fits and where it does not.
Start with how imbalances are calculated
Most footprint add-ons highlight bid/ask imbalances, but they do not all compare the same numbers.
- Diagonal comparison sets buying at one price against selling one level lower. It follows how an auction actually moves: buyers lifting the offer at a price meet sellers hitting the bid one tick below.
- Horizontal comparison sets bid and ask volume at the same price against each other. It is simpler, but it compares two sides of the market that did not meet each other.
Check which method an add-on uses and whether you can choose. FlowPilot, the strategy that ships with Vantedge Footprint, uses the diagonal comparison.
Criteria that separate useful from decorative
Configurable ratio
You should be able to set the imbalance threshold, for example 3:1 or 4:1. A fixed ratio is a sign the tool was not built for different instruments or bar sizes.
A minimum volume filter
Without one, a level with 3 contracts against 1 counts as a 300% imbalance. That is noise. FlowPilot requires at least 10 contracts on the stronger side before a level counts.
Stacked imbalance detection
Single imbalances are common. Several in a row on consecutive prices are more meaningful. Check whether the add-on highlights stacks and whether you can set how many levels make one.
Delta tools
Bar delta and cumulative delta help you judge whether a stack agrees with the bar's overall aggression. Divergence alerts save you from staring at the screen.
Absorption
Heavy volume at a price that fails to move the market is one of the most useful things a footprint can show. Some add-ons mark it, many do not.
Tick Replay support and speed
Footprints need bid/ask detail for every trade. In NinjaTrader 8 that means Tick Replay for historical bars, which loads more data. A well-built add-on stays responsive on busy ES and NQ sessions.
What Vantedge Footprint includes
Vantedge Footprint displays traded volume at the bid and ask for each price with delta shading, a cumulative delta indicator, bid/ask imbalances with configurable ratio thresholds, absorption markers, session delta profiles and cumulative delta divergence alerts.
There is one important catch: it is not sold on its own. It is included with both Vantedge plans: Vantedge FlowPilot at $299 a month and Vantedge BookPilot at $399 a month. If all you want is a chart indicator, a standalone footprint add-on will cost you less, and that may be the right call.
When a bundled footprint makes sense
The footprint earns its place when you also want the setups traded automatically. FlowPilot reads the footprint of the forming bar, waits for 3 stacked imbalances at 300% by default, checks that bar delta agrees, and sends a market order with a 16-tick target and 16-tick stop. Loading the Vantedge Footprint chart template next to it lets you see the same imbalances the strategy is acting on, which makes it much easier to judge its trades.
That pairing also helps when you test. FlowPilot can be backtested in the Strategy Analyzer with Tick Replay, so you can compare what the footprint showed with what the strategy did on the same bars.
A quick selection checklist
- Does it use diagonal imbalances, or let you choose?
- Can you set the ratio and a minimum volume?
- Does it detect stacks?
- Does it show bar and cumulative delta, with alerts?
- Does it mark absorption?
- Does it work with Tick Replay without freezing your charts?
- Is it sold on its own, or only as part of something bigger?
If the last answer matters to you, compare the plans on the comparison page before deciding.
A better footprint will not make futures trading safe, and automating it adds its own risks. Backtest, then run on SIM for a while before you let any strategy trade an evaluation, funded or live account.
