Searching for free NinjaTrader 8 order flow indicators is sensible. You should not pay for something you can get for nothing. But "free indicator" and "paid automated strategy" solve different problems. This article is honest about both, including the fact that Vantedge's products are paid subscriptions.

What you can get for free

Built into NinjaTrader 8

  • SuperDOM: a price ladder showing resting size per level, if your feed provides market depth.
  • Time & Sales: the trade tape, with prints coloured by where they traded.
  • Standard volume indicators on charts.
  • Market Replay and the Sim101 account, which are invaluable for practising order flow reading at no cost.

NinjaTrader also offers its own order flow suite with some of its paid licences. Check what your licence includes before buying anything else.

Community indicators

NinjaTrader's user community has shared many free NinjaScript indicators over the years, including footprint-style displays, delta tools and DOM add-ons. Quality varies a great deal.

Where free tools usually stop

  • Maintenance. A shared indicator may not be updated when NinjaTrader changes, and there may be no one to ask when it breaks.
  • Documentation. You often have to guess how an imbalance is calculated or what a setting does.
  • Performance. Footprint and depth calculations are heavy. Some free tools slow charts badly on busy ES or NQ sessions with Tick Replay on.
  • Execution. Almost all free tools show information. Very few act on it with defined entries, brackets and daily limits.

None of that makes free tools bad. For learning, they are often all you need, and a trader who has spent a few months reading a free footprint and SuperDOM in Market Replay will get far more out of any paid tool later.

What a paid automated strategy adds

The difference is not a better picture. It is a set of rules executed the same way every time, plus limits you cannot override in the heat of the moment.

Vantedge sells two such strategies for NinjaTrader 8:

  • Vantedge FlowPilot, $299 a month. Trades stacked bid/ask imbalances in the forming bar's footprint (3 stacked at 300% by default), with Follow, Fade or Auto direction, market entries and a 16/16 tick bracket. Needs tick data with bid/ask only. Includes Vantedge Footprint.
  • Vantedge BookPilot, $399 a month. Trades Pressure Break and Pulled Wall signals from the Level 2 book, with limit entries and a $150 / $100 per contract bracket by default. Includes Vantedge BookScope, Vantedge Footprint and the Vantedge DOM Pressure Matrix.

Both enforce a daily profit goal, a daily max loss and a cooldown after a loss. Neither is free, there is no free tier, and the included indicators are not sold or given away separately.

A fair way to decide

Stay with free tools if:

  • You are still learning what a footprint or DOM is telling you.
  • You trade by hand and want information, not automation.
  • You have not yet found a setup you would trust to rules.

Consider a paid strategy if:

  • You already trade stacked imbalances or book signals by hand and want them executed consistently.
  • Hard daily limits enforced by the strategy would help you, for example on a prop firm account.
  • You are prepared to test properly: Strategy Analyzer with Tick Replay for FlowPilot, Market Replay and SIM for BookPilot.

Use the free tools to evaluate the paid ones

Free tools and paid strategies are not rivals. Before subscribing, read the public user guides and check the logic against what you see on a free footprint or SuperDOM in Market Replay. Does a 3-level stack at 300% look meaningful on your charts? Does a 4x book imbalance held for 250 ms look like real pressure? If the answer is no, save your money.

The FlowPilot user guide and the comparison page are free to read, and the products page lists exactly what each plan includes.

Free or paid, an order flow tool does not make futures less risky. Prove any strategy on SIM, plus Market Replay for BookPilot, before it trades an evaluation, funded or live account.
